I've been working on this one story for years. It's so fascinating for me to look back and see all the different variations of it, how much it's changed over so much time. Now that I think about it, things were pretty weird way back when I first started writing it. But now I thought I'd finally gotten it to a point where everything seems to be falling into place, and that I'm happy with what I have.
So of course I had to have the realization that everything I'm writing is terribly cliched.
I'm not really sure how I manged to build up this idea of my story as a paragon of originality and taste (Ha!), but I did. And now the house of cards has fallen. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad. I'd much rather know what's wrong with my writing so I can start trying to fix it, as opposed to existing in a comfortable bubble of self confidence and pride and... no no, reality is better. It's just frustrating, because I thought I had it down, and now I realize there's a lot more to be changed. But I'm not going to give up on it. I WILL get this story down, out of pure spite if nothing else.
The biggest cliches I'm picking up on now are the following:
- An ancient civilization leaves behind clues which the characters follow to use their technology in the epic battle.
- The characters go on a scavenger-hunt style quest around the world to pick up the items they need to solve the mystery.
If anyone has any thoughts on these tropes, like examples of books which use or subvert them, or advice on how to use them to my advantage, I'd be ecstatic to hear them. I could really use some advice right now.

Message Overload
I'm attacking all the messages in my dA inbox with the same strategy I use for large amounts of any work: not doing any of it. I feel guilty deleting the huge blocks of updates when I should be at least flipping through them, so I'm going to do my best.
Like pretty much everyone else, I'm thinking of changing my name. I pretty much just made it up on the spot when I first made my account, and feel like I can do better. At the same time I don't want to confuse people. What do you think?
The date of my wisdom teeth surgery draws ever nearer. So not looking forward to the hours of bleeding and days of pain that will accompany it, not to mentio
Home!
Gone for a week, 700 new messages. Booya. :XD:
Still, finals are over, I didn't bomb Core, and I can start trying to get back into the habit of writing/drawing/not-clawing-my-eyeballs-out-with-stress. Things are looking good at the job I applied to, and right now the only other obstacle I'm looking at is getting my wisdom teeth removed. :stare: Do. Not. Want. Still, it will beat them being all up in my mouth crowding my teeth and hurting like woah.
I know I owe some people some drawings, and for the delay let me offer my deepest apology. Finals have been crazy, and I've been sick the past couple of days. Rest assured I'll have them finished
AVENGERS
OH MY GOD
I CAN'T EVEN
MY FEELINGS
SO GOOD
JUST
YEAH
GOOD TALK
SO CLOSE
I'm home for the weekend before heading back up to take my finals; I had my first ever job interview this morning and I think it went quite well, even if I don't end up getting the job. I managed not to confess to murder or try and prove how much pumpkin bread I could fit in my mouth at one time, so I'm pretty content with that.
Then, of course, there's tomorrow. Seeing the Avengers. The most important day of my life (haha I jest, the Hobbit's release will claim that title). If this movie is anything less than orgasmically amazing I doubt I'll have the strength to get through finals week; if it's as good as I hope, I will fucking slay any te

Doesn't seem too cliched...... But at the same time they aren't 100% original either.....Hm.....
I wish I could help. But I'm not a good writer
